OXFORD — Two Granville County commissioners running for another term next year will run unopposed after no one filed to run against them by the end of last week, but two other seats on the board are contested.

The Granville County Board of Commissioners seats are among several elected positions up for grabs in 2020, an election year that will be dominated by a presidential election but will also have a dramatic impact on local policies.

Commissioner Zelodis Jay, a Democrat on the board since 2004, drew a primary challenger, N. Annette Parham Myers, according to the listing of candidates from the N.C. State Board of Elections. No Republican filed for that seat, so the March 3 primary will determine the winner.

Incumbent Owen Roberts is not running for a second term. Democrats Donnie Boyd and Robert Way will face off in the March primary. The winner will move on to the November election against Republican Russ May.

Commissioners Sue Hinman and Tony W. Cozart are seeking another term unopposed.

Other contested races next year include the District 22 state senate seat currently held by Mike Woodard. Republican Rick Padgett and Libertarian Ray Ubinger have also filed for that seat.

Republican David Woodson is seeking to unseat Democrat Terry E. Garrison in House District 32 of the state legislature, which covers the northeastern quadrant of the county. In House District 2, which covers the rest of the county, Democrat Cindy Deporter will challenge incumbent Republican Larry Yarborough.

Three seats on the county school board drew one candidate each. Kathy M. Taylor, Democrat, and James McIlroy, Republican, are the candidates for register of deeds.
