Baseball: Falls Lake tops East Wake

ZEBULON The Falls Lake Academy Firebirds needed just five innings to take down the East Wake Academy Eagles on April 18.

The Firebirds pelted the Eagles with 14 hits, including two home runs from Drew Fletcher, en route to the 12-0 shutout.

Falls Lake picked up one run to start the game. Fletcher singled and was moved around by a Jacob Borden single. Andrew Watkins hit the ball toward third base and Fletcher scored on the throw to first.

The Firebirds tallied six runs in the top of the third inning. Fletcher started the inning with a home run for a 2-0 lead. Borden and Watkins followed with singles for the Firebirds. Keyon Green singled to left-center field and Collin Johnson went to right field with his single. Trey Nuckles doubled up the middle and Chase Hester drew a walk and scored to give Falls Lake a 7-0 advantage.

Falls Lake tacked on three runs in the top of the fourth inning with Borden, Green and Johnson scoring. The Firebirds put two more runs in the book in the top of the fifth inning. Colson Teal led off with a single up the middle and he was able to walk home courtesy of Fletcher’s second home run of the night.

The bomb put the Firebirds up 12-0, ending the game in five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Fletcher was the winning pitcher for Falls Lake Academy. He faced 17 batters and struck out eight in the five inning contest.

Statistics Collin Johnson (1-for-1, RBI), Andrew Watkins (1-for-4, RBI), Trey Nuckles (1-for-4, 2 RBIs, 2B), Chase Edwards (1-for-3), Drew Fletcher (3-for-4, 3 RBIs, 2 HR), Chase Hester (1-for-2, 2 RBIs), Keyon Green (2-for-4, 2RBIs), Colson Teal (1-for-3, RBI) and Jacob Borden (3-for-4).

The Firebirds will travel to Durham Athletic Park for a game with Voyager on May 3 and then hit the road to play Roxboro Community on May 4. Both games are slated to start at 7 p.m.
