FRANKLINTON — A Creedmoor man driving a moped on N.C. Highway 56 early Sunday was taken to a hospital and died after he sideswiped a car, authorities said.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash, said Trooper K. Rizzuto, who is investigating the crash for the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at 12:23 a.m. Sunday near N.C. Highway 96, in the Wilton community.

Rizzuto said the moped driver, Tony Boyd, 53, was traveling west on the highway. Troopers are not releasing the name of the other driver, but say it was a man in a passenger car heading east.

"The moped for some reason traveled left of center and sideswiped the passenger car in the eastbound lane," Rizzuto said. "The impact with the car caused him to be ejected."

The crash happened along a straight stretch of the highway.

Afterward, the moped and its driver were laying in the middle of the road. A Jeep drove into debris in the road, but did not run over Boyd.

The car's driver was not injured. Boyd was wearing a helmet.

Boyd was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he died later Sunday, Rizzuto said.

Rizzuto said blood work done at the hospital indicated there was alcohol in Boyd's system.

No charges are being filed.
