Granville County Briefs
The Methodist Men of Creedmoor United Methodist Church will host a fish fry fundraiser next Friday. Hours for serving are 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. Cost will be $8 per plate, eat-in or take-out.
The Creedmoor Methodist Women will have baked items for sale at the event. The public is invited to attend.
Creedmoor UMC is located at 214 Park Ave., Creedmoor. The pastor is Rev. Jared Hanson.
The second annual Beer, Blues and Barbecue fundraiser at Bennett Place State Historic Site will take place Saturday from 6-9 p.m. Mel Melton and the Wicked Mojos will provide the blues notes and Al Myers will make barbecue magic while visitors can play games for the young and young at heart, and also participate in a silent auction. The proceeds will help fund upgrades and expansion of the visitor center at Bennett Place.
Tickets are $25 per plate for ages 15 and older, $15 for ages 10 to 14, and $5 for those under age 10. The plates will include barbecue, a side dish, roll and a drink. Take-out is available and will include barbecue for $12 or brisket for $15 per plate. Tickets can be purchased online at: www.bennettplacehistoricsite.com. For more information, call (919) 383-4345.
Murdoch Farm Day
The individuals and staff of Murdoch Developmental Center will host Farm Day 2019 next Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. There will be musical entertainment and a classic car display, plant sale, games, food and raffle prizes.
Farm Day is Murdoch’s primary annual fundraiser to help meet the special needs of the intellectual/developmental challenged people who live at the center. Murdoch Developmental Center has 14 residential living areas and two group homes. Staff provides 24-hour care for approximately 500 individuals.
Butner National Night Out
The town of Butner will celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 5-8 p.m. at the Butner Athletic Park, 1105 W. B St., Butner.
Stem National Night Out
National Night Out will be held in the town of Stem at the Stem Ruritan Club on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 6-8 p.m.
Genealogical Society meeting
The program for the Oct. 3 meeting of the Granville County Genealogical Society will be presented by Kathy Taylor, register of deeds for Granville County. She will introduce a new initiative to encourage veterans to record their DD 214 (military discharge). The plan is to issue them a “THANK A VET” photo ID card which entitles them to discounts or incentives from participating Granville County businesses. All veterans with a recorded DD 214 will be given a list of participating businesses, and will be told they are required to show the Granville County photo ID to receive the discount or incentive.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm in the conference room at the Richard H. Thornton Library, Oxford. All GCGS meetings are open to the public.
