OXFORD After receiving a first-round bye in the NCHSAA 1A baseball tournament, Falls Lake Academy faced a tough Louisburg team in the second round of the tournament on May 10. The Firebirds scored a 4-0 win from the Warriors at the Granville Athletic Park.

Andrew Watkins started on the mound for Falls Lake and was able to hold the Warriors in check early in the game. The first inning he threw pitches that created groundouts and pop-ups. In the second inning, Watkins recorded three straight strikeouts.

The Falls Lake bats cracked early with Drew Fletcher dropping a single, but the Firebirds left him stranded. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning.

Colson Teal singled with one out. The Warriors tried to pick Teal off at first, but Teal was able to get back before the tag could be applied. Teal continued to get a sizable lead at first with Fletcher in the box. Fletcher swung at a ball, but Teal was able to take second on the play.

With Teal on second, Jacob Borden singled to drive him in to give Falls Lake Academy a 1-0 lead.

Louisburg finally put a runner on base in the top of the fourth inning. Jamosh Spencer singled only to be cut down after a fielder’s choice. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Firebirds.

Louisburg threatened to score again in the top of the fifth inning with after a pair of singles. That was as far as the Warriors would advance, however.

The Firebirds needed to get some insurance runs and they did so in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chase Edwards started the one-out rally with a single to left field. Teal followed with his own single to move Edwards to second. Fletcher then walked to load the bases.

Borden smacked his second single of the game, giving Edwards and Teal and opportunity to score for a 3-0 lead.

The Firebirds looked to break the game wide open with Fletcher and Borden on base with one out. Andrews singled to load the bases again, but Falls Lake could not push anyone across the plate.

Falls Lake added one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Collin Johnson had two balls and two strikes on him when he singled to start the inning. Trey Nuckles blasted a double that scored Johnson from first. Falls Lake left Nuckles stranded at second, but they extended the lead to 4-0.

Watkins opened the door for Louisburg in the top of the seventh inning. He hit a batter to start the inning, but settled down and notched a two strikeouts and forced a groundout to end the game.

The Warriors finish their season with a 9-9 record.

Watkins was the winning pitcher for Falls Lake Academy. He worked a complete game allowing one hit and striking out 12 of the 24 batters he faced.

The Firebirds moved to 16-1 overall and met Bear Grass Charter from Williamston in the third round of the playoffs Tuesday night. The Bears entered the game with a 21-3 record. The Butner-Creedmoor News will have coverage of the game in next week’s edition and online at
