CREEDMOOR Wes Pifer has been named the head basketball coach at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon.

Pifer, a South Granville graduate, played basketball for the Vikings in the late 1990s.

Pifer attended and played basketball for Methodist University from 2000-02 and Penn State-Altoona from 2002-04.

Upon graduation from college, Pifer returned to his alma mater in 2004 to be an assistant coach.

Pifer made his way up the college coaching ranks beginning with a stint at Miami Dade College (2008-09). Later he moved to St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, where he was the recruiting coordinator and junior varsity head coach. He conducted many administrative tasks with St. Andrews.

Pifer then joined the staff at North Carolina Central University for the 2011-12 season as an assistant coach.

He moved west and became the associate head coach of the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. While on staff there, he helped coach the team to a school-record 23 wins during the 2014-15 season.

Pifer takes the reins of a Western Oregon program that went 22-11 last season and earned their fourth bid in five seasons to the NCAA Division II NCAA West Regionals.
