Chamber membership drive

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce is holding its “Serving you since 1942” spring membership drive during March. Businesses can receive a 15-month membership at the cost of a 12-month membership. Joining in March will ensure a business is included in the new Granville Today 2020 magazine.

Senior, library programs

All Granville County senior services creative lifelong and other senior programs, along with library programs, have been canceled until further notice.

These include free sewing classes, line dancing, game afternoon, the nutrition program, tech help and STEAM programs.

Merlot & Van Gogh paint and sip

Merlot & Van Gogh, an adult recreation program inspired by the paint-and-sip craze, returns for the spring, beginning from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 20. The series of step-by-step painting classes instructed by art teacher Rachel Evancavich takes place at El Corral restaurant, 406 N. Main St.

Although outside beverages are not allowed, participants are welcome to purchase drinks, dinner or snacks from the restaurant.

Granville Gardeners meeting

The Granville Gardeners has canceled its March 23 meeting. The program will be scheduled for another time.

Badges vs. Vikings

The Creedmoor Police Department and South Granville High School “Badges vs. Vikings” March Mayhem charity basketball tournament, planned for Friday, March 27, will be postponed.

Splits workshop

The Granville County Beekeepers Association will be hosting a splits workshop with Double B Farms at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, at Cedar Grove Acres, 3123 Brassfield Road, Creedmoor. This classroom workshop will move to the apiary around 12:30 p.m. For more information, email


Creedmoor United Methodist Church in Creedmoor has canceled its Adopt-A Highway trash pickup.

PAWS for Granville Weekend

Humane Society of Granville County PAWS for Granville Weekend on March 28-29 at Vino Oasis, Stem has been postponed until the last weekend in May.

Cluck ‘n’ Shuck

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s ninth annual fall seafood event, Cluck ‘n’ Shuck, scheduled for Friday, April 3, has been canceled. If you have purchased a ticket, please contact the chamber office for a refund.

Senior achievement scholarships

The Churches of Butner and Stem Scholarship Committee announced that scholarships will be available to 2020 graduating seniors attending either public or charter schools or are home schooled who live within southern Granville County.

Students with a passing average and are planning to attend a university, four-year college, community college or trade school may apply. There will be four $1,000 scholarships awarded.

The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. on April 15. Guidelines for applying may be obtained from the senior counselor at each school. Home schooled seniors only may request an application from the First Baptist Church of Butner.

Awards will be presented at the Senior Achievement Awards Ceremonies. Notification will be mailed to home-schooled seniors. Academic achievement involvement in community

services, extracurricular activities and the need for financial assistance should be included in the letter that will accompany the application.

The community is encouraged to contribute funds so that, in the future, more scholarships will be available to deserving students. If you would like to contribute, contact First Baptist Church of Butner at 919- 575-6606.

Herb sale

The Granville Gardeners is planning to host an herb sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 25 at the Granville Expo Center. This is its only fundraiser in 2020, and the group will determine in April if the event should be canceled.

The Granville Gardeners will continue to take orders and will schedule pickups for April 24-25 at the Granville County Expo Center even if the event is canceled.

Free income tax services

Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Creedmoor has partnered with Internal Revenue Service to offer free tax preparation as part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in the Granville area. This service is available to taxpayers who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited-English-speaking taxpayers.

Trained and IRS-certified volunteers will be available until April 13.

Walk-in services are offered 5-8 p.m. Mondays at South Granville Branch Public Library on N.C. Highway 56 in Creedmoor and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at Richard H. Thornton Public Library on Spring Street in Oxford.

Appointments can be scheduled by calling 919-528-2715. Appointments are held at Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, 2197 Moss Hayes Road, Creedmoor.

Bring Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents, valid picture ID, all income information, a copy of last year’s tax return and bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit of your refund.

Drop off tax information at any of the above locations and come back later to finalize the return.
