STEM — The Granville Central football team fell in the second round of the 1AA playoffs 45-12 to Manteo on Friday, ending the team’s postseason run. The Panthers finish the season with a 7-5 overall record.
Granville Central’s potent offense struggled early to make the big plays and penalties did not help either. The Panthers looked poised to score early with Jed Evans rambling for a big gain but there was a penalty flag on the field for blocking in the back. That negated Evans’ run and the Panthers threw an interception on fourth-and-5.
The teams traded possessions with no score at the end of the first quarter. Manteo managed a field goal early in the second quarter to take the 3-0 lead.
The Redskins used the onside kick, but Granville Central was prepared for the play. However, the Panthers could not move the ball and had to punt to Manteo.
The Redskins proceeded to drive the ball down to the red zone and used a quarterback sneak to score. After the extra point the Redskins led 10-0.
The Panthers took the next kickoff and had some success with the run. Brady Smith connected with Kalvin Johnson on a key fourth-and-5play to keep the drive alive. However, the Panthers ended up punting on the drive and Manteo extended a lead it never came close to relinquishing.
The Redskins ran Kamari Brooks right, left and up the middle on the way to the 45-12 win.
Evans scored on a run and Smith threw for a touchdown for the Panthers in the loss.
Manteo will face John A. Holmes on Friday in the next round of the 1AA playoffs.
