Noon Year’s Eve

The second annual Noon Year’s Eve party for kids and their families will be held at the South Branch Library starting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31. There will be crafts, snacks and games, all leading up to the New Year’s Eve ball drop at noon.

Genealogical Society meeting

The Granville County Genealogical Society (www.gcgs.org) will hold its first meeting for 2020 on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Richard H. Thornton Library, Oxford, Mike Mercier, curator of the Camp Butner Museum, will give a presentation on the museum’s holdings and community work. Mercier has cataloged more than 850 dog tags from the soldiers who served in WWII, and is working to return these tags to their families. He is also working to expand the museum section devoted to the families and communities that were changed forever when the War Department came in suddenly and took land for Camp Butner. All GCGS meetings are open to the public, and visitors and guests are invited to attend.

Creedmoor Board of Adjustment seeks applicants

The Creedmoor Board of Adjustment is seeking applications for one resident seat, and one seat representing the Creedmoor extra-territorial-jurisdiction. Volunteers with knowledge or interest in land-use and zoning issues are encouraged to apply. The Board of Adjustment, a quasi-judicial body, renders binding decisions that considerably affect the value of properties and the rights of individual citizens within the corporate limits and inside of the extraterritorial planning jurisdiction of the city of Creedmoor. The board meets quarterly on the first Monday at 7 p.m. in February, May, August, and November at city hall. First Baptist Church Creedmoor’s Cottage Thrift Shoppe

The Cottage Thrift Shoppe will be closed during the month of January to refresh, rearrange, revitalize and make repairs to prepare for their 10-year anniversary. A celebratory reopening will be held in February.

Volunteers needed for tax assistance program

The Mount Vernon Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is seeking volunteers to help provide tax assistance in the nearby communities. The VITA program serves the elderly and low-to-moderate income families with preparing their income tax returns. Training will start soon. New hiking trails

Tar River Land Conservancy’s newest hiking trails are now open. Everyone is invited to explore two miles of new trails at Ledge Creek Forest Conservation Area Trailhead #2. The address is 3258 Old NC 75, Stem.
