Lady Panthers survive battle with Louisburg

STEM — The Granville Central Lady Panthers gave their seniors a night to remember with a 45-42 win over Louisburg on Monday.

Louisburg and Granville Central battled to a 10-all tie at the end of the first quarter with Jansen McFalls and Coryiah White leading the way for the Lady Panthers with five points apiece.

Brooklyn Fields made a pair of free throws to give Louisburg a 15-10 lead in the second quarter.

The Lady Panthers could not get the ball to go in the basket, but Khalia Morton did make her way to the free-throw line, where she sank both attempts.

Madi Leonard for the Lady Warriors answered with free throws on the other end of the court, giving a 17-12 lead.

White rolled in back-to-back baskets and Morton worked in the paint for a bucket to give Granville Central an 18-17 lead. White then found Zahera Aaloul breaking toward the basket. Aaloul banked the shot in for a 20-17 lead.

Michaya Epps trimmed Granville Central’s lead to one just before intermission.

The Lady Panthers returned to the court with a 3-pointer by McFalls. She then grabbed a rebound and fired the ball back up for a 2-pointer.

Ja’lynn Fields gave Louisburg a lift with back-to-back baskets, but Charnazsha Marshall had an answer for Granville Central. Marshall used her quickness to drive through defenders to the basket for another layup to give Granville Central a 29-26 lead.

Morton made one of two from the line and Leonard answered on the other end for Louisburg.

Brooklyn Fields tied the game at 30-all with a rebound and stick back. That did not deter Marshall from racing down court to the hoop for the Lady Panthers.

Ja’lynn Fields cleared the glass twice for the Lady Warriors and came up with big baskets both times. Louisburg had a 34-32 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Neither team could make a basket in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, but Leonard did manage to make one of two free throws to push the lead to 35-32.

Louisburg left White all alone at the top of the key. White drained the 3-pointer to tie the score.

Marshall slashed through the lane for another Granville Central score. Ja’lynn Fields crashed the Louisburg offensive board, grabbed the rebound and scored to tie the game at 37 apiece.

Morton was able to get the ball down on the blocks, but was tripped on the way to the basket. Morton made a pair of foul shots to keep the Lady Panthers in the lead.

Brooklyn Fields worked in the paint on the Louisburg end and scored.

Arriana White scored the next five points for the Lady Panthers, while Leonard could make only one of two free throws.

Both teams struggled from the line in the closing minutes of the game, but Jada Green was able to sink one of two free throws to seal the 45-42 win for the Lady Panthers.

Granville Central will travel to South Granville on Feb. 14 for a 6 p.m. tip.
