Lady Warriors survive scrappy Lady Panthers

OXFORD — Timely free throws and solid defense lifted the Webb Lady Warriors over the Granville Central Lady Panthers 48-44 in the Friday night conference tilt.

Granville Central had a plan according to coach Ray Noel: “We put a little different line up on the floor to start the game.”

The different line up worked with senior Khalia Morton and freshman Arriana White scoring for Granville Central. Coryiah White made a pass to Morton, who turned in the paint and tied the score at 6-all with a basket.

Granville Central took the lead with Zahera Aaloul converting an old-fashioned 3-point play. Webb answered with baskets by Israel Thorpe and Tierre McCaden.

Donaisha Long gave Granville Central a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter with back-to-back baskets.

Ta’ida Tucker came out firing with two straight baskets for Webb in the second quarter. Granville Central answered from the free-throw line from Aaloul and Morton.

Granville Central started to pull away with Coryiah White and Jansen McFalls scoring on drives to the basket.

The Lady Panthers had a 21-14 lead at the half.

The Lady Warriors needed to find some offense early in the third quarter. Tucker and Halle Brown edged the Webbs closer and closer with baskets and free throws.

Webb began to apply a little defensive pressure and disrupted the Lady Panthers ability to get the ball down the court.

Once Granville Central broke the press, McFalls and Arriana White scored with short jumpers. Webb sent Morton to the line for a pair and Granville Central had pushed the lead to 28-23 midway through the third quarter.

The game got a little chippy, with both teams feeling the emotion and pressure of the game. Tucker brought Webb back into the hunt with free throws.

Coryiah White canned a huge 3-pointer from the side to give Granville Central a 32-31 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Panthers increased the lead early in the fourth quarter with Coryiah White following her own shot to the basket, grabbing the rebound not once but twice, and scoring for a 34-31 lead.

Naiasha Latta drilled a huge 3-pointer to trim the lead for the Lady Warriors.

Morton canned a pair of free throws for Granville Central, but Dazshreyona Parker knocked down a pair for the Lady Warriors.

Thorpe gave Webb a 41-40 lead with time rolling off the clock. Morton answered a key basket to take the lead back, but that lasted just a moment as Tucker sank two free throws for the Lady Warriors.

Thorpe had an opportunity to seal the win at the free-throw line and hit the first two attempts.

Charnzsha Marshall gave Granville Central a little life with a huge basket, but Thorpe closed out the game at the free-throw line as the Lady Warriors claimed the 48-44 conference win over Granville Central.

Webb moved to 8-4 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Granville Central stands a 5-9 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

Granville Central will host Warren County tonight and Bunn on Jan. 17. Both games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Webb will travel to Bunn tonight and to South Granville on Jan. 17.
