OXFORD The Granville Central Lady Panthers battled as hard as they could, but a low-scoring first quarter spelled trouble and the team lost 61-37 to the league-leading Webb Lady Warriors.

The game was actually closer than the final score indicated.

Charnazsha Marshall put the Lady Panthers on the board first with a driving layup, but that lead did not last very long. Halle Brown, Israel Thorpe and Ta’ida Tucker scored for Webb on consecutive trips down the court. Thorpe hit one of two free throws to give Webb a 7-2 lead.

After a Webb timeout, Tierre McCaden drilled a 3-pointer to extend the lead. Tucker, Veronica Tharrington and Naiasha Latta scored to give Webb a 19-2 lead.

Zahera Aaloul gave the Lady Panthers a much-needed basket on a rebound and layup.

Webb had a 19-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Jansen McFalls fired a triple from the right side and Katie Cash grabbed a rebound and put the ball up off the glass. Marshall scored on a driving layup and Aaloul made two free throws to put Granville Central back in the game.

After a Webb basket by Tucker, Aaloul made one of two free throws and Trinity Williams scored on a short jumper just before halftime.

Granville Central played Webb to a tie in the second quarter, but trailed 31-16 at the half.

Webb took control of the game early in the third quarter with Tucker, Teyarria Ragland, Latta and Thorpe scoring for a 43-16 lead.

Marshall drove the lane for a basket and Donnisha Long scored from the top of the key for Granville Central.

Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers, the last coming at the buzzer to end the third quarter and trim the Webb lead to 47-26.

It did not matter to Granville Central that they were outsized; they kept on battling the Lady Warriors.

Brown and Tucker started the fourth quarter with layups and Dynasty Clark added her own touch to a basket for Webb.

Williams and Yani Bagley scored for Granville Central from just inside the arc. Cash crashed the boards, hauled down a rebound and went back up to score.

Thorpe found openings in the lane for three straight trips to the hoop for Webb and Clark scored on a short jumper for the Lady Warriors. They had a 61-33 lead with time running off the clock.

Marshall made one of two free throws and McFalls knocked down a 3 with little time left on the clock.

Webb claimed the 61-37 conference win to move to 8-0 in league play and 14-4 overall.

Granville Central dropped to 9-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

The Lady Panthers will host Louisburg on Feb. 7, travel to Bunn on Feb. 11 and South Granville on Feb. 14.
