STEM The Granville Central girls soccer team had two players finish with hat tricks in their 9-0 win against non-conference opponent Crossroads Christian on April 23.

Coming off spring break, Granville Central coach Gregg George expressed some concern that his team might be a bit rusty considering the Lady Panthers had not practiced in about a week. Those concerns quickly went away with the first goal of the match coming with less than one minute off the clock.

Granville Central then pounded two more goals deep into the net for a 3-0 lead. Ashlyn Smoot scored again on a penalty kick to extend the lead to 4-0 and Sandra Jimenez tallied her second goal of the match shortly after Smoot’s goal to put the Lady Panthers up 5-0.

Granville Central picked up one more goal before the first half whistle.

“We are still not passing the ball the way we should,” George said at the break. “We will make some quick adjustments and get going in the second half.”

The Lady Panthers took the halftime talk to heart. Granville Central began to make crisp, sharp passes that kept Crossroads Christian chasing the ball early in the second half.

Smoot dribbled the ball down the field and passed the ball to Jimenez for another goal and a 7-0 lead.

Granville Central kept Crossroads Christian pinned down near the goal and fired multiple shots at the keeper. Finally, Smoot squeezed the ball by the Lady Colts goalie for another goal and an 8-0 lead.

Granville Central worked the ball in deep inside the box and Leah Parrott made the final goal of the match.

Brittney Morris was credited with the shutout in goal for Granville Central.

The Lady Panthers moved to 10-5-1 on the season with the victory.

Statistics – Ashlyn Smoot (3 goals and 3 assists), Sandra Jimenez (3 goals and 1 assist), Ashley Perez (1 assist), Jessica Beltran (1 assist), Maria Manzo (1 goal) and Leah Parrott (1 goal).

The Lady Panthers are scheduled to travel to Roanoke Rapids on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match.
